Camper Conversion Critique: One Year On
Being just over a year since we started converting our Peugeot Expert Tepee WAV into Erica-the-Campervan, Mick and I sat down to chat about what we would consider doing differently.

This is an add-on to the Camper Tour video, where I forgot to show the underfloor storage area, in the small space where the wheelchair ramp used to be.

Peugeot Expert Camper Conversion - Window Tinting
Переглядів 1,6 тис.3 роки тому
Many months after we finished our camper conversion, and after a few trips that highlighted how beneficial it would be to reduce the visibility of inside when viewed from outside, we finally got around to tinting the windows. I wanted to give the tinting a go myself, but fully expected it to go badly, to try one window, throw my toys out of the pram at my inability to achieve a good result, and...
Peugeot Expert Camper Conversion - Part 17: Costs
Переглядів 6 тис.3 роки тому
I recorded this weeks ago then life got a bit manic and I didn't get around to posting it. Better late than never! This one's all about the numbers. I get to the headlines reasonably quickly so you don't have to sit through all the detail that follows if you don't want to (although skip to the end for an example of the sort of wittering I have to contend with in the editing!).

Peugeot Expert Camper Conversion - Part 15: in which Erica becomes a campervan!
Переглядів 4,9 тис.3 роки тому
The conversion of Erica from patient transfer vehicle to campervan really seemed to accelerate over the last couple of weeks. It's not that we spent any more time working on her but because the most recent tasks (like finishing the sofa/bed) were so visible and turned Erica into a functional campervan. There's still a need for flooring and curtains, and there are other less visible minor tasks ...
Peugeot Expert Camper Conversion - Part 14: Connecting the Electrics
Переглядів 3 тис.3 роки тому
We're now rapidly trundling towards the end of the conversion of Erica, our Peugeot Expert Tepee Camper Conversion. It was back in August, in Part 5 of this series, that I ran the first fix of wiring. With the heater and battery installed, it was now finally time to connect the whole electrical system. That involved three days* largely spent kneeling on the floor, but it was work that provided ...
Peugeot Expert Camper Conversion - Part 13: Diesel Heater
Переглядів 6 тис.3 роки тому
Oh dear! This is a video of very questionable quality. Sorry about the wind on the mic and the shaky camera. They're always a feature of my videos, but this one's worse than most. In this video we fit a 2kW Chinese Diesel heater. The first lesson (and a major one) we learnt along the way is that where you want to put your diesel heater isn't necessarily where it's going to end up. In our case t...
Peugeot Expert Camper Conversion - Part 12: Changing the passenger seat/installing a swivel
Переглядів 19 тис.3 роки тому
In this video we remove Erica's double front passenger seat and replace it with a single, then fit a swivel base to it. The removal of the old and fitting of the new were quick and straight forward tasks, but we were then held up significantly by the issue of the connector for the third seat belt. The fitting of the swivel was also an easy task, although we made it far less so due to a false st...
Peugeot Expert Tepee Camper Conversion - Part 11: Completing the Kitchen

Erica has a kitchen! This is exciting progress, even though it has taken many more hours than expected to achieve (I work on the basis that all construction takes twice as long as my initial estimate; this took waaaaay more than that!)
Peugeot Expert Tepee Camper Conversion - Part 10: Kitchen Carcass, Gas Locker and Smev Sink/Hob
Переглядів 4,1 тис.3 роки тому
We're not doing this build in a logical or consistent order! We started the kitchen whilst we were waiting for parts to arrive to allow us to do the things that should have been done first. It then went on hold for a couple of weeks whilst we returned to those things (like the solar and ceiling installation as shown in Part 9 of this series) but since then it has been full steam ahead. In this ...
Peugeot Expert Tepee Camper Conversion - Part 9: Solar and Insulation

The solar panel had become a bit of a saga and was holding us up inside too. We finally got it fitted, which then allowed us to insulate the roof and get the header liner back in.
Peugeot Expert Tepee Camper Conversion - Part 8 - Wheelchair Ramp Removal
Переглядів 13 тис.3 роки тому
Erica was a wheelchair accessible vehicle when we bought her, and her ramp had proved handy until this week, when it became an impediment to the building of the gas locker. We thus bit the bullet and took an angle grinder to her ramp.
Peugeot Expert Tepee Camper Conversion - Part 7 - Carpeting the Camper's Walls
Переглядів 3,9 тис.4 роки тому
This one is mainly the carpeting of the walls, where Mick got a bit carried away and covered more than we'd intended. However, we had enough carpet and the end result looks good, even if large parts of it are going to be covered with furniture. There wasn't much I could do whilst Mick was carpeting, although I did finish off the boxing/insulation of the nearside rear wheel arch, and once he'd f...

    Very useful video. I am about to do the exact same to the same model of Peugeot expert, except the single seat I have is another driver's seat. One question I am worried about: Did you disconnect the battery before disconnecting the seat, or is it ok to disconnect the existing seat with the battery still connected but the ignition off?

    • @GayleEBird
      @GayleEBird Рік тому

      We didn't disconnect the battery, but did have the ignition off...until we turned the ignition on and got an air bag error come up. We feared an error code would need to be cleared, but as soon as we plugged the old Seat 3 seat belt in, the error went away (yep, still driving around with the third seat belt sitting under the seat 3 years later!). Probably best not to turn the ignition on until you're done, though. All the best.

      I insured it from the outset as a campervan, initially with an 'under conversion' endorsement on the policy, which was removed when we completed the work. Some policies require you to update the insurer every time you add another item to the conversion, but my policy only required me to tell them when I had completed work and what the final value was. Hope your conversion is going well.

    • @GayleEBird
      @GayleEBird 2 роки тому

      Thank you! Our spare wheel is currently sitting in our back garden ... which isn't particularly useful should we get a flat when out and about! The conclusion we've reached is that there's nowhere we can possibly put a spare (can't go underneath because of the lowered floor; can't go inside because it would take up too much room), so we've got one of those 'fill it with sticky sludge, pump it up' emergency tyre repair kits and some breakdown cover.

    Super video - I have a 2014 Citroen Dispatch Combi(same as the Expert) that we use as an occasional camper - the front middle seat is too small now for our kids to use so the idea of swapping this out for a swivel base is very appealing. Your video made it clear that this is actually doable and not too difficult(especially when you have the instructions/diagram!). The problem will be in sourcing a single seat I imagine.

    • @GayleEBird
      @GayleEBird 2 роки тому

      Thank you! Yes, it is the standard wheel base. The long version would certainly have been advantageous when it came to fitting the gas locker in between the wheel arch and the tailgate! The distance between the front seat bases and the tailgate is approximately 2.3mm. To allow for the front seats to slide/recline, slightly less than that is usable for furniture.

    Hi Gayle, I've just gotten myself a tepee for conversion and your series has been really useful. I was just wondering on this video, theoretically, would it be possible to remove the raised sections of the floor down to the base of the vehicle to offer additional height across the whole living area? Thanks!

    • @GayleEBird
      @GayleEBird 2 роки тому

      The 'raised' parts of the floor are the original floor of the vehicle, and they sit on the chassis members. The middle section is a cut-out between the chassis members, into which a trough has been welded. So, no, it wouldn't be possible to lower the whole floor.

    • @guitarchannell

    Hiya, do you think the sound deadening is absolutely necessary?

    • @GayleEBird
      @GayleEBird 2 роки тому

      No, personally I don't think it's necessary. My thinking: this vehicle was driven around for years as a car (i.e. no bulkhead separating front from back) and I doubt if, in that time, anyone batted an eyelid at the level of noise coming from the panels. Plus, the panels on a vehicle of this size are, save for the roof, fairly small with a reduced (compared with a big van) capacity for creating resonant noise. Added to that, the insulation we added will have reduced any noise reaching the inside of the vehicle. I was dubious as to whether to sound deaden, but decided to err on the side of caution and went with a mid-range option. My opinion having used the product was that it did make a difference to the amount of noise generated by each panel, however, I still doubt whether it was a big enough difference to make it worthwhile and I certainly wouldn't consider it to be essential. Unfortunately, it's one of those things that is almost impossible to gauge with any certainty unless you run two identical vehicles side-by-side, one with and one without deadening applied.

    Hi Gayle, very interesting videos! Did you look into whether the wheelchair assisted modification invreased your insurance premiums? And have you found the extra height/depth useful? Thanks you!

    • @GayleEBird
      @GayleEBird 2 роки тому

      I didn't look at the impact of the wheelchair modification on insurance price, in that the only insurance quote I got for a non-WAV Expert had other complications that would have likely impacted the premium too. So, sorry, I can't be any use on that subject. We briefly discussed the pros and cons of the lowered floor section in the 'One Year On' video, and didn't come to any conclusion as to whether, if we were to buy again today, we would go for the lowered floor or not. I do like having the extra internal height, as it allows for standing in a crouched position, rather than being fully bent over, but it comes at the cost of being more likely to ground the middle of the vehicle in severely pot-holed car parks. The other considerations that are worth thinking about are that the WAV version with the full length cut-out: 1) doesn't have the standard Peugeot Expert exhaust pipe; and 2) doesn't have anywhere practical to keep a spare wheel without taking up significant amounts of room inside the vehicle.
